Frequently asked questions
Is an ultrasound safe?
Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound is considered safe when performed by trained healthcare professionals. It uses sound waves to create images, without ionising radiation, and is widely used during pregnancy and for children and adults.
Will I need a contrast injection?
Routine ultrasound scans do not require a contrast injection. Contrast is occasionally used for specialised ultrasound examinations to show certain structures more clearly. If it is recommended for your scan, our team will explain why and what to expect beforehand.
Do I need to stop taking my medications?
You can usually continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor or our team advises otherwise. If your scan requires fasting, please ask about medication instructions, especially if you have diabetes. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.
How long does an ultrasound take?
Most ultrasound scans take around 10–45 minutes, depending on the area being examined. More detailed examinations may take longer. Our team can advise how much time to allow when you book your appointment.
